10 Maoist Rebels Killed in Eastern India

Police say 10 Maoist rebels and one paramilitary police officer have been killed during a security operation in eastern India.

Officials say the fighting began Sunday as security forces worked to clear the West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand state of Maoist rebels. Six security personnel were wounded.

Explosives, weapons and ammunitions were also recovered from a Maoist camp.

The Indian government has been under increasing pressure to target Maoist rebels following a number of deadly attacks in recent months.

The Maoists, who say they are fighting for rights of the poor and landless, have been blamed for a passenger train derailment that killed 146 people last month.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has called the insurgency, which has swept across several Indian states, the biggest threat to the country's internal security.
