During a surprise visit to Burma Thursday, former U.S. president Bill Clinton urged national leaders to defuse the ethnic and religious divisions that have continually roiled the country two years into a transition away from military rule.
In a speech in Rangoon, the former president said that despite the country's many strides forwards, there was still much to do.
Clinton noted that the world has been pulling for Burma ever since it ended a half-century of military rule in early 2011.
"The whole world cheers every piece of good news and is sick every time they read about sectarian violence,” said Clinton.
This was Bill Clinton's first visit to Burma.
In 2011, his wife, Hillary Clinton, made a landmark visit to the country during her tenure as U.S. secretary of state.
