Burma's main opposition party, the National League for Democracy, says it has made no progress in talks with the national Election Commission about controversial new campaign rules.
NLD spokesman Nyan Win Thursday says that the rules are illegal.
"No legislation has given authorization to anybody for this kind of instruction," he said. "The second point is if they enforce this instruction it will be against the jurisdiction of the Union Parliament."
The main point of contention is the "campaign limitation" imposed by the commission upon the candidates for the elections. The commission said only candidates themselves may organize public rallies.
Meanwhile, the NLD says it will join with other activist groups in the coming days to rally for changes to make it easier to amend the country's constitution.
NLD leader and Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi is expected to be the featured speaker at gatherings in Rangoon Saturday and Mandalay on Sunday. She is expected to share the stage with Min Ko Niang, one of the student leaders from the 1988 uprising that was crushed by the former military junta that ruled Burma, also known as Myanmar.
The opposition says the current rules for changing the constitution set too high of barrier to making needed reforms.
