Protesters in eastern China have succeeded in shutting down a government plan to build a waste incinerator they fear would impact their health.

The demonstrations, which have lasted more than two weeks, turned violent Saturday, with hundreds of police clashing with protesters in the village of Yuhang, close to the city of Ningbo.

The state-run Xinhua news agency reported that protesters overturned 30 vehicles and set two police cars on fire. One police officer and one protester were seriously injured.

In an online statement late Saturday, the Yuhang government said all work on the project has been suspended and will not resume until the project receives public support.

Some information for this report was provided by AP and Reuters.
