DRC Says Over 100 Killed in Monday Attacks

The D.R. Congo's government has more than doubled the death toll from a series of Monday attacks, saying 103 people were killed.

The new figures were given by government spokesman Lambert Mende, who said eight security officers were among those killed when rebels launched their attacks.

Mende said security forces have captured more than 150 alleged attackers.

On Monday, rebels launched attacks at the international airport, state television station and the main military base in Kinshasa.

The rebels who attacked the television station identified themselves as followers of Pastor Joseph Mukungubila, a Christian preacher and 2006 presidential candidate.

A press release carried on Pastor Mukungubila's Twitter account called the attacks a spontaneous uprising that took place after security forces stopped his followers from distributing leaflets and then attacked his home.

On Tuesday, Mende declined to name those responsible but did make reference to a "religous figure."
