Judges at the International Criminal Court say former Ivory Coast president Laurent Gbagbo will stand trial on charges of crimes against humanity.
The court's pre-trial chamber found "substantial grounds" to believe Gbagbo is responsible for acts of murder, rape and other crimes committed in Ivory Coast between December 2010 and April 2011.
That was after Gbagbo lost the presidential election to Alassane Ouattara, but refused to step down, triggering months of clashes between their supporters.
Gbagbo has been in ICC custody since 2011, a few months after he was toppled with the help of French forces.
There is no word on when the trial will begin.
The ICC has also opened cases against Gbagbo's wife Simone and one of his chief aides, Charles Ble Goude, in connection with the post-election violence.
