Indian police say dozens of Kashmiri students were expelled from their university and threatened with sedition charges because they cheered for the Pakistani cricket team during a televised match against India.
Police chief Omkar Singh said the investigation began after reported clashes at the university following Pakistan's win over India in Sunday's Asia Cup clash.
"After Pakistan cricket team won the match against India, some Kashmiri students of Swami Vivekanand Subharti University started cheering in support of Pakistan team after which a clash erupted and lead to a ruckus within the campus. In this regard, we received a letter from the University Registrar P.K. Garg acting on which we have registered a First Information Report (FIR) under Section 113, 124A, 153A and 427 of Indian Penal Code."
Authorities are trying to track down 66 students in the northern city of Meerut for questioning to determine whether the charges are appropriate.
Many Kashmiris associate more with Pakistan, a Muslim-majority nation, than with Hindu-majority India, which is officially secular.
