Lautenberg, Oldest U.S. Senator, Dies at 89

The U.S. Senate's oldest member has died of complications from pneumonia. Aides to New Jersey Senator Frank Lautenberg say he died Monday at the age of 89.

Lautenberg served two separate periods in the Senate, being first elected in 1982 and retiring in 2001. He was re-elected to the Senate and had served since 2003. He had announced he would retire at the end of his term in 2015.

The Democrat was the Senate's last World War Two veteran.

Lautenberg's death means New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, a Republican, will appoint a replacement.
