Oregon is the first state to elect an openly LGBT governor. Associated Press projects Kate Brown as the winner of the election there. She had been serving as governor since February 2015, when then-Gov. John Kitzhaber resigned amid an influence-peddling scandal. Brown will fill the remaining two years of Kitzhaber's term.
Brown talked about her bisexuality and her fear of being outed during a commencement speech at Willamette University in May. She has been married to her husband since 1997 and had has two step-children.
