Live Coverage: Clinton, Trump Tangle Over Trade, Taxes, Race

update

During the first presidential debate between Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and Republican nominee Donald Trump, the candidates tangle over trade and the economy. At times, moderator Lester Holt allows the candidates to speak over each other and go beyond their two-minute time limits.

Fact-checking the debate:

Hillary Clinton answers moderator Lester Holt's question about home-grown terrorists in the U.S. She says the U.S. needs to work with Muslim communities in the U.S. and abroad, criticizes Donald Trump for his attacks on Muslims.

In response, Donald Trump blames President Obama and Hillary Clinton for creating a vacuum that created Islamic State when they took U.S. troops out of Iraq.

During her response, Clinton says she hopes the fact-checkers are working. She corrects Trump, saying it was Republican President George W. Bush who determined when U.S. troops were taken out of Iraq.

Hillary Clinton is discussing her plan to defeat the Islamic State group, and also raises issues she dealt with as secretary of state.
