Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej was greeted by tens of thousands of his subjects Thursday as he left a hospital where he had been treated for nearly four years for a variety of ailments.

The 85-year-old monarch, wearing a salmon-colored suit, waved to well-wishers lining his route as he and Queen Sirikit traveled to the seaside palace Hua Hin, a two-hour drive south of Bangkok.

The king was admitted to Bangkok's Siriraj Hospital for respiratory problems in September 2009. His wife had been in same hospital since last year.

Bhumibol is the world's longest-serving monarch, on the Thai throne for over 60 years.
