American pop/rock icon Tina Turner is becoming a Swiss citizen.

Turner, who is 73, was born Anna Mae Bullock in Tennessee. She has lived in Switzerland since 1995.

The newspaper in Turner's Zurich suburb reports the singer has passed local requirements for citizenship. However, she still needs federal authorities to give her the stamp of approval before she receives her Swiss passport.

Her spokeswoman says Turner is "happy" in Switzerland.

Turner's hit songs include "Private Dancer," "Simply the Best" and "What's Love Got to Do with It."

She produced a number of rhythm and blues classics with her ex-husband Ike Turner, including "A Fool in Love" and "Proud Mary."

Turner chronicled her years in an abusive marriage to Turner in her book I, Tina, which was transported to the big screen in the movie "What's Love Got To Do With It."
