A volcano in southern Japan has erupted.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said Mount Aso, on the island of Kyushu, erupted early Saturday, spewing volcanic ash and rocks into the air.

The residents in nearby Aso City were cleaning off their ash-covered cars Saturday morning.

Mount Aso is located in the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire," home to more than 100 volcanoes.
