Qatar Pledges $50 Million to Palestinian Government

The Gulf Arab state of Qatar says it will donate $50 million to the Hamas-led Palestinian government, which is in a financial crisis.

The contribution announced Monday in Doha comes after the United States and European Union cut off financial support to the Hamas-led Palestinian government until Hamas renounces violence and recognizes Israel.

On Sunday, Iran said it would contribute $50 million to the Palestinian Authority.

Since taking office last month, Hamas has come under diplomatic and economic pressure from Israel and Western governments, which consider Hamas a terrorist organization.

Israel is withholding about $50 million in monthly tax revenues it collects for the Palestinian Authority.
