Mexican High Court Agrees to Hear Arguments in 1971 Massacre - 2004-10-14

The Mexican Supreme Court has agreed to consider whether former President Luis Echeverria can be tried for genocide in connection with a 1971 massacre of student protesters.

The court's decision to review the case comes three months after a lower court judge said the statute of limitations had run out.

Mr. Echeverria served as Mexico's president from 1970 to 1976. Authorities allege he was responsible for the June 1971 murder of dozens of young protesters who were beaten to death during a march through Mexico City.

Mr. Echeverria has said he is innocent.

The former president is a longtime leader of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, which lost power in 2000 after dominating Mexican politics for 71 years.
