The United Nations has named the former mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg, as the special envoy for cities and climate change.
U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said Friday that Bloomberg will help him consult with mayors around the globe to raise the political will to fight climate change.
Bloomberg introduced a number of initiatives to combat climate change during his 12 years as mayor of New York City, including requiring hybrid taxi cabs and building bike lanes.
The billionaire businessman and philanthropist announced in December before leaving office that New York City's greenhouse gas emissions have dropped by 19 percent since 2005.
Bloomberg has also been active in the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, an international group of mayors dedicated to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. He is scheduled to co-host the group's next summit in Johannesburg in February.
