IS Shoots Down Iraqi Helicopter over Mosul

Debris is seen on a street controlled by Iraqi forces fighting the Islamic State in Mosul, Iraq, April 6, 2017.

Islamic State fighters shot down an Iraqi military helicopter over Mosul Thursday, killing both crew members on board, the Ministry of Defense said in a statement.

The helicopter was providing support to federal police forces battling Islamic State militants in western Mosul, the statement said.

This is the first time a military helicopter has been shot down near the terror group's stronghold since the U.S.-backed offensive to retake the city began last October.
