Malaysian Ferry Capsizes

Malaysian officials say an overcrowded ferry boat has overturned in a river in a remote area of Borneo island, leaving at least 21 people missing.

Police say the boat was carrying more than the recommended limit of 74 people Tuesday when it struck rocks and capsized on the Rajang River in the sparsely populated state of Sarawak.

Most of the passengers were rescued by villagers or swam to shore. A rescue effort is underway to find the rest, with officials fearing that many passengers may be trapped inside.

The accident occurred as the ferry was carrying passengers who were traveling for an upcoming harvest festival holiday.
