Powerful Quake Strikes Off New Zealand Coast

A USGS National Earthquake Information Center map shows seismic activity around the area off the coast of New Zealand where a powerful earthquake struck Friday, Sept. 1, 2016.

A powerful earthquake struck off the coast of New Zealand but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the 7.1-magnitude quake hit early Friday, 169 kilometers northeast of Gisborne.It had a depth of 30 kilometers.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said no tsunami of significant strength was expected.
