Search Ends for Ship's Crew Off Scottish Coast

The upturned hull of the Cypriot-registered cargo vessel Cemfjord is shown in the North Sea 15 miles from Wick in northeast Scotland, Jan. 3, 2015.

Maritime officials said the eight crew members of a ship that capsized and sank in the North Sea off the coast of Scotland are presumed dead.

Authorities said Monday the search for the crew of the Cyprus-registered cement carrier Cemfjord has been called off.

The ship carried seven Polish crew members and one Filipino.

Tony Redding, spokesman for the German shipping company Brise, said investigators would look for "abnormalities," but the only irregularity seems to have been "severe weather."

The capsized Cemfjord was spotted Saturday near Wick on the northeast tip of Scotland.
