South Africa's Mandela Recovering Well

Former President Nelson Mandela smiles as he formally announces his retirement from public life in Johannesburg, South Africa, June 1, 2004.

A grandson of former South African President Nelson Mandela says the anti-apartheid icon is recovering well from a lung infection.

The grandson says the 94-year-old former leader looks good.

He commented Saturday after visiting Mr. Mandela who is spending an eighth day in a Pretoria hospital.

Well-wishers have been leaving balloons and posters outside the facility.

On Friday, schoolchildren gathered near the hospital, sang and wished Mr. Mandela a speedy recovery.

This is the fourth time Mr. Mandela has been hospitalized for lung infections since December.

He has a history of lung problems dating back to the tuberculosis he contracted during his 27-year imprisonment under South Africa's apartheid system.

He was released in 1990, and four years later was elected president in the country's first democratic polls.
