The senior United Nations coordinator on the Ebola virus says he will travel to Africa later this week.

Dr. David Nabarro in New York Tuesday said he met with U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and is headed to Washington for meetings Wednesday with officials from the Centers for Disease Control and the World Bank. He departs Wednesday evening for Senegal.

Nabarro will have meetings in Dakar on Thursday; then go to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. He says he also may go to Nigeria.

Nabarro said the U.N.’s first priority is to stop the spread of the Ebola virus, which he says has changed the way society as a whole interacts. He emphasized the importance of preparing for the next outbreak of a deadly virus.
