An Indian police officer had his hand cut off in an incident Sunday at a vegetable market in Patiala, Punjab.

Harjit Singh and several other officers stopped a vehicle as it attempted to enter the market.

The men in the car became enraged when the police asked for travel passes, attacking the police. One of the assailants chopped off Singh’s hand with a sword.

The police officer’s hand was reattached after a lengthy surgery.
