French Hospital: Arafat's Condition Worsened

The French military hospital caring for ailing Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat says his condition deteriorated overnight and he is now in a deeper coma.

A hospital spokesman says the comatose state that led doctors to move Mr. Arafat to an intensive care unit has since worsened. He described the development as "significant" but did not elaborate. There has been no official diagnosis of Mr. Arafat's illness.

Meanwhile, a delegation of Palestinian leaders hoping to see Mr. Arafat has arrived at the French military hospital.

The officials, including Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia, his predecessor Mahmoud Abbas and Foreign Minister Nabil Sha'ath, traveled to Paris Monday. They had initially canceled the trip after Mr. Arafat's wife, Suha, accused them of plotting a coup against her husband.
