Thousands March Against Iraq in London

Thousands of demonstrators have marched through central London to protest the U.S.-led war in Iraq.

Sunday march marked the end of a three-day meeting of the European Social Forum, a gathering which advertised itself as one for people opposed to war, racism and corporate power.

Elsewhere in London, British Health Minister John Reid said any possible transfer of British troops into northern Iraq, under U.S. command, would be dictated by operational needs, and would not be a "tawdry political deal" to boost President Bush's election prospects.

He said opposition party charges of a political deal diminish current British troop efforts in southern Iraq.

The British media have been reporting that as many as 650 soldiers may be moved north to cover for U.S. forces battling Fallujah insurgents. Defense Minister Geoff Hoon is to address Parliament on the issue Monday.
