10,000 Join Student Opposition Protest in Lviv

At least 10,000 students have rallied in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv to protest government repression of student activists before Sunday's presidential election.

The protesters gathered outside the municipal building Tuesday, urging the city council to support their cause.

The human rights group Amnesty International Monday said it has reports the Ukrainian government is harassing and arbitrarily arresting members of the youth opposition group Pora.

Amnesty said it understands at least four Pora members were arrested while engaged in such activities as distributing leaflets critical of pro-government candidate Viktor Yanukovych.

Meanwhile, an opposition lawmaker escaped injury in a fire bomb attack on his vehicle late Monday in a village just outside Kiev.
