Mens Tennis: Safin Advances to Round 2 of St. Petersburg Open


Top-seed Marat Safin of Russia has advanced to the second round of the Saint Petersburg Open men's tennis tournament in Russia.

Safin was leading in his first round match when his opponent, Austria's Alexander Peya, retired in the second set due to an injured ankle.

Two of the tournament's high seeds were knocked out early. Third-seed Mardy Fish of the United States lost to France's Cyril Saulnier 6-7, 6-4, 6-3, while number-five Nikolay Davydenko of Russia fell to Czech Karol Beck 6-1, 6-7, 6-4.
