Senior Communist Rebel Leader Killed in Philippines

update

The Philippines says government troops have killed a senior communist rebel leader in the southern Philippines.

Manila says Mario Bagundol was shot in the stomach Wednesday during a gunbattle outside a military outpost near the town of Sindangan. Mr. Bagundol was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

The Philippines says Mr. Bagundol was a regional leader of the Communist Party of the Philippines and its armed rebel wing, the New People's Army.

The groups have been waging a 35-year insurgency against the Philippine government. The United States says both groups are terrorist organizations.
