Two hundred Spanish marines have arrived in Cap Haitien, Haiti, to bolster peacekeeping forces along the northeast border of the Caribbean nation.
The troops, which arrived Wednesday, will work in a joint operation with Moroccan peacekeepers due to arrive Sunday.
There are some 3700 troops and civilian police from around the globe on the island operating under Brazilian command, and known as the Minustah.
The United Nations earlier this year authorized a total force of up to 6700 troops and 1600 civilian police. The resolution authorizing that deployment is due to run out at the end of November.
Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, has been wracked by clashes between supporters and opponents of ousted President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. About 60 people have been killed in the violence, which began in late September.
Mr. Aristide fled Haiti in February under mounting internal opposition and international pressure, and now resides in South Africa.
