Somalia's new president has expressed hope that with the help of an African peacekeeping force, stability can return to his troubled country within one year.
President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed spoke to reporters Friday in Kampala, following talks with his host, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.
Mr. Yusuf said that 13 years of civil war in Somalia has killed 300,000 people and displaced some two million others from their homes.
The Somali president also said he would work to end to tensions between his autonomous home state of Puntland and the breakaway region of Somaliland.
Somalia's transitional parliament elected Mr. Yusuf president last month. But the new government remains based in Nairobi, due to ongoing instability within Somalia.
There has been no functioning central government in Somalia since the fall of Mohammed Siad Barre in 1991.
