French Anti-Nuclear Protester Killed by Train Carrying Radioactive Waste

update

French police say an anti-nuclear protester died Sunday after he was run over by a train carrying radioactive waste to Germany.

Police in the northeastern city of Nancy say the man, who chained himself to the railway, lost a leg and died on the way to a nearby hospital.

The incident took place near where two other anti-nuclear protesters had earlier chained themselves to the tracks. The train, carrying nuclear waste from a French plant in La Hague to Gorleben in northern Germany, was delayed for two hours while the protesters were removed.

On Saturday, several thousand anti-nuclear activists demonstrated in the northern German town of Dannenberg to protest the transport.

Germany sends spent fuel to France for reprocessing, then takes it back for storage. Protesters say the transport poses dangers for nearby areas.
