Taiwan conducted a military ground exercise Monday, pitting two units against each other.
At least 1,600 soldiers were involved in the mock battle that simulated an invasion of the island.
The exercise came as tensions across the Taiwan Strait simmered , with Beijing worried that Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian could push for a formal break from the mainland before his second term ends in 2008. China has threatened to attack if Taiwan declares independence.
The rivalry between Taiwan and China, separated by the narrow Taiwan Strait, is seen as one of the most dangerous flashpoints in Asia. The two have been adversaries since a civil war ended on the mainland in 1949.
