Northern Japan Hit With New Earthquake

A strong earthquake has hit northern Japan, weeks after a devastating quake rocked the area.

Preliminary reports said the new quake was centered in the eastern Kanto region.

The quake - measuring a preliminary 5.8 on the Richter scale - hit Monday morning local time. It could be felt 200 kilometers away in Tokyo.

Six people were injured when parts of a wall fell on them and a high-speed bullet train in the province was halted as a precaution. But authorities said there was no danger of tsunami.

Northern Japan has been hit with a series of aftershocks since an earthquake, measuring 6.8, hit Niigata Prefecture on October 23. It killed 39 people and left more than 2,000 injured.
