Tamil Tiger rebels in Sri Lanka say they have sent a message to President Chandrika Kumaratunga on ways to end a 19-month stalemate in peace negotiations.
The message was conveyed by Norwegian peace brokers led by Foreign Minister Jan Petersen, who met rebel chief Velupillai Prabhakaran Thursday in the rebel-held north. Later, Mr. Petersen returned to Colombo to meet with Mrs. Kumaratunga.
The rebels' main negotiator, Anton Balasingham, was quoted on the pro-rebel TamilNet Web site as saying the message offers suggestions on how to take the peace process forward.
The peace talks collapsed in April 2003 amid rebel demands for a separate homeland in the Tamil-dominated north and east.
