Romanian striker Adrian Mutu is appealing his dismissal from the English football club Chelsea for gross misconduct.
Chelsea had terminated his contract after the 25-year-old Mutu tested positive for cocaine in an out-of-competition test in September. The English Football Association followed that with a seven-month ban which last week was extended worldwide.
The Premier League will now set up a hearing at which both Mutu and Chelsea can argue their cases. A spokesman said there was no timeline to determine the appeal. Depending on the outcome, either side can make a final appeal to the Football League Appeals Committee.
Mutu has been allowed by football's world governing body FIFA to train with his former club Dinamo Bucharest in Romania while he serves his suspension.
