English football club Manchester United has reached the round of 16 in the Champions League tournament with a 2-1 victory over Olympique Lyon of France.
The win in Group-D Tuesday marked the 1,000th time coach Alex Ferguson has led Manchester United in 18 years. Meanwhile, four-time tournament winner Bayern Munich of Germany romped into the second round with a 5-1 beating of Maccabi Tel Aviv of Israel in Group-B.
Nine-time champion Real Madrid is still struggling, however, held 1-1 at home by Bayer Leverkusen of Germany in Group-C. Chelsea of England, Italian clubs Inter Milan and Juventus, and Lyon of France are in the last 16. AC Milan of Italy and Barcelona of Spain are expected to join them on Wednesday.
