Uganda Denies Crackdown on Independent Media

Uganda’s Information Minister has denied allegations by free press advocates that he is cracking down on the independent media.

Recently, the government said it would consider closing stations that allow offensive language to be used against the president or allow vulgarity in their broadcasts, in particular during call-in shows.

VOA Swahili Service reporter Jerome Kassembe called Uganda’s Minister of Information James Nsaba Buturo and asked him about what some have called a media “crackdown”.
