Algerian media report that security forces have killed six suspected Islamic militants in a raid of a rebel hide-out in the northwestern part of the country.
The armed men were killed in a two-hour gun battle earlier this week in the Relizane province, west of the capital, Algiers.
In a separate incident, state media report that a security guard was found with his throat slashed Thursday in eastern Algeria. Islamic militants are suspected.
More than 100,000 people have been killed in violence since Islamic militants launched an uprising against the government in 1992. National police chief General Ali Tounsi said recently that there are about 500 Islamic militants still active throughout the country.
