Musharraf to Explain Why He Must Continue as Army Chief

Pakistani media say plans to address the nation Thursday, possibly to explain his decision to go back on a promise to quit as army chief.

General Musharraf, who seized power in a bloodless military coup in 1999, previously said he would quit holding both the president's and the army chief's portfolios by December 31 of this year. He made that promise to muster support for his constitutional amendments that gave him sweeping powers.

But earlier this month he said he would have to stay on as army chief, and that he would explain his decision later in a television address.

Thursday's address will be just one day before the December 31 deadline.
