Burundi Troops Kill 46 Rebels

Burundi's army says it has killed 46 fighters during an attack on a camp of the country's last active rebel group, the National Liberation Front.

An army spokesman, Colonel Adolphe Manirakiza, says three soldiers also were killed and three wounded in the raid near the capital, Bujumbura.

One news agency quotes the spokesman as saying the assault began Saturday in response to an attack by the Hutu rebels on a security checkpoint.

The National Liberation Front has refused to sign a power-sharing agreement between Burundi's government and other rebel groups.

Burundi is expected to hold a referendum on a new power-sharing constitution this year, following repeated delays.

The deal seeks to end a civil war sparked by the 1993 assassination of the country's first democratically-elected president, Melchior Ndadaye.
