Taiwan Agrees to Talks on Direct Flights to China

Taiwan has agreed to hold talks with China on allowing direct charter flights between the two countries during the Lunar New Year holiday.

Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, which plans policy toward China, said it would send an airline representative and the civil aeronautics chief to meet with their Chinese counterparts in Macao on Saturday.

The two sides will discuss proposed charter flights between several Chinese and Taiwanese cities during the busy time for travelers over the early February holiday.

Taiwan has banned direct flights with China since it split from the mainland after the 1949 civil war. The two sides established Chinese New Year flights from Shanghai to Taipei in 2003, but the flights had to stop over in Hong Long or Macao.
