UN Atomic Energy Chief Satisfied with Nigeria's Nuclear Program

Nigerian officials say the head of the United Nations atomic watchdog agency is satisfied that Nigeria's nuclear program is designed for peaceful purposes.

The officials say Mohamed ElBaradei, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, was also satisfied that the Nigerian nuclear program met international safety standards.

The officials made the remarks Thursday after Mr. ElBaradei inspected Nigeria's nuclear facilities. The Vienna-based atomic agency has a mandate to inspect any nuclear facility around the world.

During the two-day inspection, Mr. ElBaradei and his team visited the Gamma Irradiation Plant at Sheda, near the capital Abuja, and a nuclear research reactor at the Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria's northern city of Zaria.
