Afghan Warlord Dostum Survives Assassination Attempt

Reports from Afghanistan say ethnic Uzbek warlord Abdul Rashid Dostum has survived an apparent assassination attempt that wounded more than 20 other people.

The reports say the incident happened Thursday, in the northern town of Shibirghan, where a suicide bomber blew himself up near a group of worshippers, including General Dostum, as they came out a mosque after prayers.

Two of the general's bodyguards were among those wounded in the attack.

The identity of assailant is not known.

General Dostum, who was a candidate in last October's presidential election, finished fourth behind Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
