Golf: Langer Won't Captain Ryder Cup Team in 2006

German golfer Bernhard Langer says that he will not return to captain the European Ryder Cup team next year because he wants to play.

His decision leaves the way open for former Masters champions Ian Woosnam of Wales, Nick Faldo of Britain, Jose Maria Olazabal of Spain, and Sandy Lyle of Britain to take the captain's job.

The 47-year-old Langer said he told European Tour tournament committee chairman Jamie Spence that he has every intention of playing on the 2006 team.

Langer, a two-time U.S. Masters champion, guided the Europeans to an 18 and one half to nine and one half victory over the United States last year in Oakland Hills, Michigan.

Europe plans to name its Ryder Cup team March first in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Tom Lehman is the U.S. team captain. The 2006 Ryder Cup competition is September 22-24 outside Dublin, Ireland.
