Argentine Authorities Regain Control of Prison, Hostages Released

update

Argentine authorities have regained control of a prison after a two-day riot in the central province of Cordoba.

Police say all the hostages have been released and the convicts leading the riot have handed over their weapons.

Five inmates, two prison guards and one police officer were killed in the rioting that began Thursday at the San Martin penitentiary. Officials say the warden was among the more than 60 people who were taken hostage.

Some 1,000 military personnel had been posted around the maximum security penitentiary after the uprising began.

Television reports had showed prisoners brandishing homemade knives and holding hostages on the roof.

The rioting erupted over inmates' demands for improved living conditions. The penitentiary houses at least 2,000 prisoners.
