State prosecutors in Berlin say the football (soccer) referee at the heart of Germany's match-fixing scandal was arrested Saturday on eight counts of fraud.
Robert Hoyzer has acknowledged receiving $85,000 in bribes from a Croatian betting ring for rigging or attempting to rig a number of second division, third division and German Cup matches. The prosecutors say they decided to arrest the 25-year-old Hoyzer because new evidence suggested he might try to flee the country.
Berlin prosecutors are investigating 25 people on suspicion of fraud, including four referees and 14 players suspected of rigging at least 10 games, mostly in lower divisions. Croatian brothers from Berlin, who are allegedly involved with organized crime, were also arrested.
