Storm Death Toll in Pakistan Surpasses 500


The death toll from a week of torrential rain and heavy snow in Pakistan has risen to more than 500, with more fatalities reported Tuesday.

Officials say snow and landslides blocked roads to hard-hit areas in the North West Frontier Province, where the death toll jumped to 260 from 181.

Relief efforts also continue in the southwest, in Baluchistan province, where thousands of troops are helping displaced people. Officials say some 20,000 people there have lost homes and 200 people have been killed. At least 100 people died there after a dam burst last week, sweeping entire villages into the ocean. Another people 100 died from a week of continuous heavy rain and snow.

Another 56 people have been killed in Pakistani Kashmir, most of them buried by avalanches.
