Death Toll from Bangladesh Ferry Sinking Rises to 74

The death toll is climbing from a ferry accident near the Bangladesh capital, Dhaka. At least 74 people are confirmed dead, and as many as 150 others are missing.

Local authorities say the ferry sank during a storm overnight. Some of those who survived said they felt a collision with another vessel before the ferry capsized.

Police say they believe about 200 people were on board when the ferry went down in the Buringanga River, but some survivors put the number at more than 400.

Thousands of distraught relatives gathered on the river's banks to await news of their loved ones.

Authorities have ordered an investigation. Such accidents are common in Bangladesh, where many people travel by ferries which are often overcrowded.
