OAS to Elect New Secretary-General April 7

The permanent council of the Organization of American States, OAS, says it will elect a new Secretary General on April 7.

The council issued the resolution Wednesday after meetings with Ambassadors from member nations El Salvador, Chile and Mexico - the nations fielding candidates for the post.

The candidates include former Salvadoran President Francisco Flores, Chilean Interior Minister Jose Miguel Insulza, and Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Ernesto Derbez.

The post came open last October when former Salvadoran President Miguel Angel Rodriguez was forced to resign after facing corruption charges in his home country.

The OAS is made up of the countries of the Western hemisphere and is designed to strengthen cooperation and promote common interests among its member nations.
