US Military Thwarts Iraq Prison Camp Escape

The U.S. military says it has foiled an escape attempt by detainees at a large coalition-run prison camp in southern Iraq.

Officials said Friday they discovered two large tunnels under Camp Bucca, which houses more than 5,000 detainees. They said the exit from the largest tunnel was outside the compound's fence.

Military officials say the tunnels were nearly complete, and prisoners were likely waiting for the heavy fog that rolls in early each day before trying to escape.

In other developments, gunmen killed a senior Iraqi National Guard Commander, Colonel Salman Mohammed Hassan, and wounded two of his sons after they left a funeral service at a Baghdad mosque.

And Iraqi politicians say the national assembly will convene on Tuesday to announce the new government.
